Razer the well-known gaming hardware manufacturer has created a new loyalty system software in the form of a desktop mining app. As they posted on their official Twitter: “Have a gaming rig on idle at home? Launch Razer SoftMiner on it and start racking up Razer Silver for rewards for doing nothing at all.”
Razer Silver of course is the company’s own loyalty reward token (there is also Gold available but that is an actual digital currency used to buy games etc. from stores partnering with Razer). So by installing the SoftMiner you are awarded some and can earn more Silver, using your pc to solve blockchain-based problems. Problem is that the economy and efficiency of the miner leaves a lot to be desired as the returns seem very low and to add insult to injury your Silver gets deleted totally if not spent within 12 months. Users on twitter reported that it would be impossible, and definitely costly to try and “mine” a Razer keyboard worth 199£ using the app every day at full power. The SoftMiner is currently in beta though and Razer might have time to fix things before accusations of scam start hurting sales.
